Since it is almost 2010 and I don't feel like writing right now I have decided to work on a list for my favourite films of 2009. In order to qualify for this list the movie had to open in theaters during 2009. I have not seen all films released in 2009 so some that deserve to be on the list will not. This means that this list represents my favourite films of 2009.
Films I have not seen yet which I am sure will deserve to be on this list.
-Inglorious Basterds
-The Hurt Locker
-Ponyo
-Where the Wild Things Are
-The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus
-Star Trek
These are my 7 favourite films of 2009 (I know its a weird number)
7. Watchmen
Was a great adaptation of a graphic novel I have never read. Had an enjoyable story and unique twist to the superhero genre. One thing I liked about it is that it was photographed very much like a comic book which gave it a unique look.
6. Pink Panther 2
I know that many people thought this movie was stupid. In one sense you're right, it was not the greatest movie. But I have always loved Steve Martin's sense of humor so it goes on my list of favourites for 2009.
5. Christmas Carol (3D)
Many people have complained that it was too much of an effects show. It may have gone a bit over the top with the 3D, but it was a very emotional and enjoyable story. Although I will admit there isn't a Christmas Carol adaptation I haven't liked.
4. Coraline
One of my most favourite stop motion films. I have always admired Henry Selick's style and it matched this film very well. Although I do feel that the screenplay could have had some minor adjustments to make it better, it was very good.
3. Avatar
Titanic, for guys. Although I liked it a lot I feel that there were some moments that felt cliched, and it was quite easy to guess what would happen next. None the less it showcased Cameron's incredible ability to create new worlds and was much better than that silly film, Battle for Terra. My prediction about this film is that it will end up like Titanic. It will win lots of Oscars, but will not get nominated for best original screenplay. In a few years when newer generations come to the cinema it will not remain as one of the greatest. But if it does, that would be cool because I liked Avatar a lot.
2. Up
Pixar is amazing.
1. District 9
My first thought was that it would be a disappointment. I knew Peter Jackson was producing it but I had never heard of Neil Blomkamp before. I was expecting another "effects show." When I saw the film I was blown away. Not only was it presented in a unique and relatively original way. It had an incredible story that was greatly emotional and heart wrenching along with great effects. One uique touch as Niel Blomkamp describes in the commentary is how he took a lot of the emphasis off the special effects by not placing them in the area of focus. In many films nowadays they like to showoff their special effects with grand epic shots. There's nothing wrong with that, but this new twist to story telling made the film stand out from others of its kind.
That is my list, I hope you enjoyed reading it.

Near Merry Christmas
Nate
I don't have much to say. I just felt like I should give an update. I've been trying to keep myself energized by watching the Star Wars Bonus features. But unfortunately, in doing so I don't actually accomplish anything. I've been writing for the past two months and am getting sick of it.
Its not that I've been stuck at writers block for two months its just that every time I have an idea I think is great, I later look at it and realize it sucks.
I soon find myself going off on tangents and the bridge I was going to build out of straw has soon become airport terminal. Yes, its THAT LUDICROUS, and its driving me mad. Now that I have entertained you with my terrible writing skills for a couple of moments I shall bless with information you probably already know.
There are Larry the Loud Librarian Commentaries now up on the youtube channel and there are many more to come.
I also thought it would be fun to start showcasing some of my art and photography work. Here's number one.
Merry Christmas, hopeful the next post will be more upbeat and cheerful. I'm not being a pessimist I'm just being honest.

Updates about whatever and New Film Up on Machinima
Post by Nate
Very much like what the title says, this post involves updates of what ever. Nothing special. However, a new film is available for viewing on Machinima.com. You can watch it here.
http://www.machinima.com:80/film/view&id=42622
I know you'll all like it. I'm also considering reconstructing the website and making it cooler looking. So be ready to see some of those exciting new changes in the future. Since I'm writing this I might as well talk about what else we're working on.
Right now we're in Pre-Production on two different projects. The first one is another Episode of Larry the Loud Librarian. I don't want to give any details about it because that would ruin the surprise. The other thing I'm writing is a short film. I don't want to say anything about it except that it is a Sci-Fi Drama and will likely be done with GMOD.
I've also recently dug up many of the films I made in my earlier days. Its kind of fun to look back and laugh at how much you sucked back then. Whats even weirder is looking at your new films and comparing them to your old ones, and seeing that change from relatively bad to slightly relatively better.
I'm also listening to a CD a friend lent me a while ago and its skipping all over the place. The CD didn't come with any track information but I've been informed that the group is named 10 Years. They're not bad. I would like to listen to it without it skipping all over though.
That's enough for my drowsy rambling for today. I am quite tired and would like to read a book and fall asleep. Good night

Been Back for a While Plus New Film
Post by Nate Draper
Hey everybody! I'm back, well I have been for a while. I've actually been back since September, but I didn't ever bother to write anything. I don't even know if anyone reads this anyways, but no matter. I just wanted to let everyone know that I have not stopped making videos. In fact I am making a new one right now that will hopefully be on the Machinima Network in the next few weeks. Right now I'm in the Post-Production stage tweaking the editing and adding special effects. I will admit its not the most entertaining part of the process, I love editing but it can be annoying watching the film over and over again trying to spot out every error.
On a more personal note I've decided that the best way to study film is to watch film. So I've been watching many of the works by Stanley Kubrick and Ingmar Bergman. Both of whom I would highly recommend for anyone craving a good film.
That is all.

Good Bye (temporarily)
Post by Nate
Hello, I am here to say good bye for the summer. Different members of the Wacky Canoe clan have all been summoned to various places this summer. Don't worry, I plan to continue working on the Wacky Canoe stuff in my spare time (if I have any). Other than that, have a nice summer.
Sorry for the Short Post

Larry the Loud Librarian Episode #4 Released
Post by Nate
It's FINALLY here! You can watch Larry the Loud Librarian on our youtube channel by clicking on the Title for the post. You can also go to www.youtube.com/wackycanoe to view. Also, don't forget to rate and comment on it, feed back's nice, but positive feedback is even better.
IT'S TIME FOR SOME UPDATES. We're about to begin writing our next episode of Larry the Loud Librarian. Forged Physics Episode 3 is still underway, but don't expect to see it anytime soon, sorry. As I said before I'm currently writing a screenplay for something completely AMAZING! Don't worry details come on this later.
I've also decided to attempt some modding for a game called TCE (True Combat Elite). There's a group of us which are currently working on our own custom map for TCE, and potentially a machinima short with it. Other machinima ideas are being thrown around for some video tutorials, a few of which I hope to have up near the end of the month.
Much going on at the moment

Disapointments and Production Updates
Post by Nate
A few weeks I got to go to an awards gala known as the eddies (www.theeddies.ca). The eddies is a high film festival where students from all over Halton Region can enter their works and potentially win awards. For the occasion we entered Larry the Loud Librarian Episode 1, Talking to Miis: Congreediaselfanism, Caero the Last Planet Trailer and Dear Santa. Unfortunately, none of them won any awards. We didn't win a single thing, so I am rather disapointed. Below I will list what we entered and into what category
Larry the Loud Librarian Episode 1 - Comedy
Talking to Miis: Congreediaselfanism - Animation
Caero the Last Planet Trailer - Commercial
Dear Santa - Music Video
You can watch the winning videos here and see if you agree with them.
http://www.theeddies.ca/winningvideos2009s.html
Now its time for some production updates
Larry the Loud Librarian Episode 4 is almost finished production so you can expect to see it go up in the next few weeks. Forged Physics Episode 3 has been in thevoice recording stage for quite some time. There is no set date on this yet but you should be able to see it before Christmas. I have also decided to start making some machinima tutorials, especially for Talking to Miis, since that's the one I'm getting most requests for.
Lastly I would like to say that we are currently working on a brand new shrot film. The name of this film will be unveiled at a later day. We are still in pre0production stages but is likely going to end up as another Machinima film. It's going to be quite different from anything you have seen before. I will be posting mroe updates on this in the future.

Update and Video Picks of the Week
Post by Nate (Crazzymoose)
Its been a while since I last left an update on the news page. Since the last time I believe we have released two more Talking to Miis episodes, so yes it has been a while. I don't know if anyone ever bothers to read this but its fun to write anyways. Before I get onto the video picks I'm going to give a quick overview/production status.
I've been getting a lot of feedback from people and its obvious that people want a Larry the Loud Librarian Episode 4. Don't worry, we are working on it. The last few months have been rather busy but you will definitely see anther episode before Summer Break. In other news, we are also working on another Forged Physics Episode and a super secret special short film which I am actually working on right now (besides typing this).
Video Picks of the Week
Eddie Smithson - Vae Victis Part 2
PhylactereCola - BORO
AyesDyef - Team Fortress 2 - Super Smash Brothers 64 Intro

EARTH DAY! (WHO KNEW!)

Top 5 Things to Do On Earth Day:
1) Dress up as Al Gore and say why YOU should have been elected Pres!
2) To reduce litter, get a pile of all those unrecyclable (gas tanks, paint cans) and cycle-able products, and put them on a huge fire. Mmm. Monoxide Marshmallows!
3) If you have one of those really annoying Earth Geeks, the ones who go to those “Environmental Meetings”, take them down to a Ceveron Company Conference, and show ‘em who’s boss!
4) Buy an electric car, and then use the battery to play Xbox!
5) Hope that next year, you won't be dared to strike naked painted green, saying "Go Hippies!" through the streets, all due to some dare that you made when you where drunk last St. Patrick's Day. :(

Phylosiphy and Video Picks of the Week
Post by Nathanael Draper (crazzymoose)
This week we had a new video uploaded on Machinima.com. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUXqYKlsWCU) This was another school project turned into a video. I was fun to make and fun to edit so now you can watch it. I'm kinda dissapointed because its not doing as well as I would like for the quality it is. Not that its bad its just that no body's watching it. I thought this would actually do better than some of the other stuff. The one thing I realized is there's a major flaw in my thinking, it is a trailer for a Shakespearean movie. Shakespeare doth speakith rather strangeth englisheth. The general Machinima fan doesn't have a very large tolerance for Shakespeare. I am not a large fan myself but think about it, his plays are still being performed 400 years later as if they're brand new. I sure wish my films could be around for centeries to come.
After my long and likely boring rant I now present my video picks of the week
Youtube Symphony Orchestra - "The Internet Symphony" Global Mash Up
KickThePj - Innovative Gaze

I Can't Think of a Title for this Post
Post by: Nate (crazzymoose)
I know its a little late but I have some exciting news. I won a Thea Award! What's a Thea Award Nate? A Thea is like the Middle Ontario Theatre version of the Oscars. To be quite honest I had no idea the thing even existed until I recieved it. Before I mentioned that I was writing the music for a play. Apparently the adjudicator really liked it and gave me the "Most Promosing Youth or Newcommer Award." The coolest thing is that there's a trophy to go with it. It looks kind of like a female version of the oscar but it's wearing a monk robe.
In other news, you may have noticed the new podcast. My fried Dan wants to make one monthy. You may have also noticed our attempt to allow subscriptins via this blog. I'm still playing around with it but its not working. If anyone has any suggestions on a quick and easy way to subsribe to our podcast with iTunes can you please email info@wackycanoe.com?
One other thing I'd like to start doing in order to keep up with regularity is start doing a video pick of the week. This is where I'd pick videos from across the internet (not our videos, maybe sometimes) and tell you which ones I liked. These videos are going to be recent videos, within the last week or so, I may find something a bit older that I like and post it. I'll write it as creator-name of film
Video Picks of the Week
SMP Films - What Goes Up...
Patrick Boivin - Iron Man vs Bruce Lee
Mercer Report - RMR: Frontpage
There is also going to be a video uploaded to machinima in the next week or so. Happy Easter fellow Earthlings

Ivy Machinima Contest
Post by Nathanael Draper aka Crazzy Moose (www.youtube.com/crazzymoose)
IMPORTANT! We currently have two entries in the Ivy Film Festival and we want to WIN!
You can view both of our entries here
http://www.machinima.com/ivyfilmfestival2/view&id=860
and here
http://www.machinima.com/ivyfilmfestival2/view&id=919
Why are we telling you this? First of all its for your personal entertainment because they are both definitely very entertaining. Secondly, we'd like to ask for your help. We would like you to go and give both those videos your honest opinion. We don't want you to rate them 6/6 just because you are so dearly a fan of Wacky Canoe and love everything we make. Actually, I lied, I would really love it if you gave it 6/6 stars and all the opposition nothing (don't reate them), but that would be dishonest. On the other hand, if you're completely biased, have no taste and utterly hate our videos then please don't assume they suck. In my personal opinion these are two of our better Machinima works. They're not the typical stuff we do so it is a little hard to judge, but they are very good from an artsy stand point.
One of the two entries has been pre-released so you may have already seen it. The other one has been pre-released but was originally on my youtube channel (crazzymoose). If you would like to help, actualy, I AM COMANDING YOU TO HELP! Go and make a Machinima.com account right now. It's free, it's easy and it's fast. This way you can also keep up with us on Machinima.com. After you create your account please go to the Ivy Competition Page (you'll ind the link on the right of the Machinima home page) and give both videos and honest rating (preferably a very high one).
Usually we don't do this kind of please help us outy kind of stuff. I have realized that most people either absolutely love the stuff we make, or they absolutely hate it. This is the case with most things but I have found it has come across very strongly for us. This is not, bad, in fact I think its kind of good. The only problem is that the first round is a rating system and in order to move on you need to make it into the top ten fan votes. I think that a decent judge group would really apreciate the mesages coming across in the videos but the typical Machinima fan deems it as "different" than what they expect from Machinima so they rate it low. I know I'm jumping to conclusions but that is what happens on youtube so I think its going to happen here.
Please check out the ivy Competition videos and give your honest opinion. Help us beat Xanatos.

Many Things Happening
Post by - Nathanael Draper (crazzymoose)
We've been really bust with lots of things. Due to a lack of time and sleep I have chosen to present those things in a list such as this
1) New Web Site Look: We have re modeled the website and are going to add some more pages and keep better track of others.
2) New Series: It's AWESOME! That's all I'm going to say (you can watch it on the youtube channel)
3) New Episodes: In series such as "Talking to Miis"
4) Music: I have been asked to compose the music for a play at the local theatre. Right now it has been showcased in an add for Erin Radio. After the play I may put it up for download.
That leads me into the next thing I would like to blabber about. We may be adding a downloads page where you can get all of the music we have made for FREE!
